When patients ask Dr. Selena Marchan about who benefits from Invisalign clear aligners, the simple answer is this: almost everyone. Unlike conventional braces, they are removable, which makes eating and cleaning your teeth much easier. That’s why our Jacksonville, FL, office recommends Invisalign.

They are molded to fit each patient’s mouth and are practically invisible. Because aligners apply less force in straightening teeth than metal braces, the risk of harm to your teeth is reduced.

Benefits to adults

Traditional braces are associated with children and teenagers. Many adults want to have their teeth straightened but hesitate to wear metal braces. They also worry about having to change their diet and not being able to eat the foods they normally enjoy.

If you are an adult who’s considering braces, our team will tell you Invisalign aligners are a great option for discreet teeth straightening. Your teeth will be straightened with virtually invisible braces.

The aligners are easily removable when you eat, so you can enjoy any food you normally would consume. You simply clean your teeth normally after eating and you won’t have to worry about getting food stuck in your braces.

If there is a special occasion during which you do not want to have any braces in your mouth at all, you can remove the aligners for up to four hours without causing any damage.

Benefits to teenagers

Our team knows that teenagers are often involved in sports and other after-school activities, and generally lead pretty busy lives. If your teen plays a musical instrument, you may be concerned that having metal in his or her mouth will interfere with the ability to play. Invisalign aligners avoid the damage that can happen with traditional metal braces.

For sports that require players to wear mouthguards, the expense of specially constructed mouthguards to fit over braces is also eliminated. The aligners can be removed during sports activities and teens can easily wear a mouthguard. Teenagers who play musical instruments simply remove the aligners while practicing or playing in the band or orchestra.

Teenagers routinely have trouble flossing teeth between the wires and brackets of traditional braces, but Invisalign allows for easy dental cleaning. Since Invisalign aligners are removable, brushing and flossing are simpler and more likely to be performed.

If you have minor teeth alignment issues or crooked teeth, you may be interested in Invisalign treatment in Jacksonville, FL. Your local dentist, Dr. Selena Marchan, will use her professional expertise to give you the straight smile of your dreams.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a clear plastic aligner tray used to straighten crooked and misaligned teeth over time. It was created as an alternative to braces for adults. However, teens and children also use Invisalign now. It has become very popular since the clear aligners are barely noticeable. You can wear your aligner out in public, and it would not be noticeable. You can also remove the aligner from your mouth as needed to eat, drink, or brush your teeth.

Does Invisalign Change the Shape of Your Face?

When you come to our office in Jacksonville, FL, for Invisalign treatment, you may end up slightly changing the shape of your face over time. After all, crooked teeth can influence the shape of your face. An overbite forces your upper lip to protrude out. On the other hand, an underbite will make your lower lip protrude out more. If your lip no longer has to protrude out over a severe overbite or underbite, your lips will appear differently. Your lips may appear less plump if your teeth are positioned further back in your mouth.

Your profile may be adjusted. When such bite issues are corrected, they can shift your face slightly. If your face is asymmetrical, Invisalign and other braces may be able to improve it.

However, Invisalign does not change the shape of your jaw. Braces and Invisalign also do not have any effect on the shape of your nose. Any visible changes in the shape of your face will most likely be seen on your lips.

Invisalign treatment in Jacksonville, FL, is available at the office of Dr. Marchan. Call us at (904) 221- 5678 today. Our staff can help you get on the journey to a beautifully straight smile in no time.

Tags: Floss

Dr. Selena Marchan, your Jacksonville, FL, dentist, recommends daily flossing and regular dental appointments to keep your teeth healthy and your smile looking great. Keep reading for all the reasons you need to floss and call to schedule your biannual teeth cleaning appointment today!

Prevent tooth decay

Daily brushing and flossing are important to prevent plaque and tartar from building up on the teeth. Flossing removes stuck food particles that brushing can't reach to reduce the buildup of tartar that can lead to tooth decay.

Prevent gum disease

When plaque and tartar build up on the gum line, the bacteria irritate the gums and they start to pull away from the teeth. Gum disease can lead to tooth loss, but daily flossing is how to keep your gums healthy enough to support your teeth.

Freshen breath

Daily flossing is good for keeping your breath fresh, too! Removing stuck food particles makes sure they don't linger around to affect your breath. Adding an antibacterial mouthwash to your routine can help keep your breath fresh even longer.

Keeps you healthy

Flossing isn't just a preventative measure for keeping your teeth healthy. By preventing bacteria from growing in your mouth, flossing is good for your overall health.

Less time and money spent at the dentist

When you floss daily to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, you're protecting the investment you've made in your smile. Keeping up a great oral hygiene routine at home and seeing your Jacksonville, FL, dentist for professional teeth cleaning appointments twice a year saves on more involved and more expensive dental work in the future.

Your Jacksonville, FL, dentist, Dr. Marchan, provides comprehensive dental care and encourages you to keep up a great oral hygiene routine that includes daily flossing. Keep flossing and contact us for an appointment at (904) 221-5678.

Would you know what to do if a dental emergency happened to you?

We know that a dental emergency was never something you thought you or your child would have to deal with, but unfortunately, it happens more often than we would like; however, it doesn’t have to be scary if you know what actions to take to protect your smile. From the office of our Jacksonville, FL, family dentist Dr. Selena Marchan, here are the most common dental emergencies and what you should do if they happen to you or someone you love,

A Toothache

That’s right, a simple toothache is considered a dental emergency. That’s because a toothache can be a sign of a cavity, infection or injury (e.g. cracked tooth). Unfortunately, this isn’t a problem that will fix itself so if someone in your family is dealing with a toothache it’s time to see our Jacksonville, FL, dentist right away. In the meantime,

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to ease inflammation and pain
  • Take an anti-inflammatory medication to alleviate pain and swelling
  • Apply a topical anesthetic like Lidocaine to the gums around the tooth
  • Call our office

Dental Trauma

Dental trauma includes any injury to a tooth that results in problems such as chips, cracks and breaks, as well as dislodged or knocked out teeth. While the best thing you can do, especially for a knocked-out tooth, is to see your dentist immediately (we can often reattach the tooth if you come in within 30 minutes of the incident for treatment), here are some other tips to keep in mind,

  • If you are bleeding, apply pressure to the area with a clean compress to stop the bleeding.
  • If a permanent tooth is knocked out, find the tooth, rinse it in cold water (gently!) and then either try to place it back into the socket or hold it between the gums and your cheek and call our office.
  • Always handle a tooth by the crown. Never touch the roots!
  • If your tooth is chipped or cracked, it’s also important to collect the pieces and bring them with you to our office.

While COVID19 has put a stop to all non-essential, non-emergency dentistry it’s important to know that our Jacksonville, FL dentist is here for your family during true urgent and emergency medical needs. Call or text us at (904) 221-5678. In the meantime, stay safe and be well, and we will see you in May.
