Missing or weakened teeth have many effects on your smile. However, you can keep your smile full and strong with dental crowns and bridges. These dental restorations can work together or separately to give you a smile you love. Learn more about crowns and bridges with Dr. Selena Marchan in Jacksonville, FL.
What are crowns?
Crowns are a tooth-shaped, cap-like dental restoration which fits over a tooth. A dental laboratory creates the crown based on a mold of the mouth, carefully molding it into the correct shape to fit into your smile. Color-matching techniques used ensure an even-colored smile. Dentists use crowns to strengthen a weakened tooth, improve the appearance of a misshapen or stained tooth, stabilize a tooth with a large filling or replace a missing tooth in conjunction with a dental implant. Additionally, crowns on either side of a dental bridge anchor it into place.
What are bridges?
Similar to crowns, a dental bridge is a porcelain dental restoration created in a dental laboratory. Bridges, however, replace a missing tooth. Instead of a single tooth-shaped crown, a bridge has three prosthetic teeth in a row with a crown on either end. The crowns attach to the teeth surrounding the gap and hold the bridge in place, filling in the gap. A removable bridge uses metal clasps on either side to latch onto the surrounding teeth.
Crowns and Bridges in Jacksonville, FL
Dental crowns and bridges restore the mouth’s biting surface, making eating and chewing less difficult. They also give you a smile you can be proud of, boosting confidence and making social interactions more enjoyable. These important dental restorations are made to last, improving your smile for many years with the proper care. Caring for your crowns or bridges involves simply brushing them with your natural teeth twice daily and flossing at least once. A bridge may require special threading floss to clean its underside. Consult with your dentist for the best at-home oral care techniques for your dental restorations.
